Growing with Blogs

The last 2 years have been a great time of learning for me. I've been privileged to work with someone who is a leader in the area of technology and instruction. Because of her, blogs and wikis are not new to me. However, I personally have not been an active blogger and do not 'follow' blogs other than to read an occasional post that I come across. I am unsure why I don't engage fully. I always enjoy a good conversation with others, but there is comething about posting and commenting that I don't get. I know it has to do with time, and energy, but I also think it has something to do with the public space. I'll need to reflect more on that.

I appreciate your thoughts on blogging and can identify with the challenges of time and public reflection. As with most things, we all set our professional priorities and while I did make every effort last year to maintain a professional blog, I did find it always fell to the bottom of the "must do's" in my day. I found it much easier to blog about my reading reflections in a class than my reactions and reflections to my work because of the nature of my work with others. One has to be careful.

I also find that I learn and reflect best as I talk with a critical friend in our weekly meeting after work. There I can blurt, be challenged, and rethink in a face-2-face interaction that feeds my learning style.

Hopefully your blog will provide you a productive, reflective space for your thinking and learning as a member of this learning community .

Enjoy!

Hi Joanne,

I can understand your difficulties/frustrations with blogging. I like reading blogs and commenting on the blogs of others but I have trouble keeping my own blog current. We are staring one at work and the secret I think is to advertise it, get the word out there that you have one and have something worth saying/reading/commenting on. We are all going to take turns at posting comments so that might help.

Hey Joanne just opened googlereader and there was a posting you had made. The more I use googlereader the more I get it and I think that relates to your posting about using blogs. I don't think it has to take much time out of your day, but I think it is something we have to work at.

In 2007 I started a blog for my students, but I didn't make many postings and to be honest I forgot about it. But this year I decided to do a better job. I think this term I will try and do my project with it to see how integrated I can get it.

Hi Joanne. I feel the same as you about blogs. they're work. If I start blogging then something else has to give. I have a hard time thinking of what I would give up to blog.

JoAnne, maybe it's the one on one connection? The face time that you miss??/ Could maybe technology manage to expand your resources but still keep the face to face time for you?? (if that's what you like/need?) Just a thought. Like Brent said, blogs are work. Maybe if there's something in it for you, they'd be worth the while? Maybe a change of your perspectives might help? MIght this class maybe bring some of that forward for you?/ Just thoughts darcy
